Electric off-road bikes need far less servicing than a combustion machine — no oil, no filters, no spark plug — but the chain, brakes, suspension and battery still wear. Here is the routine our workshop applies to every Sur-Ron, Talaria, 79Bike & Y-VOLT we service, and the parts you need for each job. Always follow the intervals in your owner's manual: they take priority over any general guidance.

1. 1.Chain and sprockets

   Clean with a degreaser, brush both sides, dry, then lube the inner side of the chain while turning the wheel. Adjust tension to the manual's slack figure. Replace the chain and both sprockets together once the teeth are hooked.

2. 2.Brakes

   Measure pad thickness and replace once roughly 1 mm of friction material is left — below that the backing plate bites into the disc. Check the minimum thickness figure stamped on the disc itself (typically about 1.5 mm under the original thickness, disc-dependent) and never ride below it. Most electric off-road bikes use DOT4 fluid, but confirm on the master-cylinder reservoir cap; brake fluid is hygroscopic, so it absorbs moisture over time and its boiling point drops — bleed and replace it every 2 years even with no sign of fade. Bleed sooner if the lever feels spongy, and inspect the disc for scoring or warping. Bed new pads in with around ten progressive stops without locking the wheel before braking hard.

3. 3.Suspension

   Wipe the stanchions after every ride, check for oil weeping at the seals, and service fork oil once travel feels harsh or noisy. Set sag for your weight before chasing damping settings.

4. 4.Battery and electrics

   Charge with the supplied charger, avoid leaving the pack fully empty, and keep connectors clean and dry. Inspect the main harness and controller connectors for corrosion or heat marks at every service.

5. 5.Wheels and tyres

   Check pressure cold before every ride: off-road tyres usually run between 1.0 and 1.7 bar (15–25 PSI) depending on terrain — lower on soft or muddy ground for grip, higher on hard-pack or tarmac to avoid pinching the inner tube. Always follow the manufacturer's figures for your model. For road-legal use in Europe the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm, though knobs usually need replacing well before that for real grip. On spoked wheels, re-check spoke tension after the first 50 km (spokes bed in and slacken slightly), then at every service. Most electric off-road bikes in this segment still run inner tubes rather than tubeless, so check carefully for a pinched tube when fitting.
