Electric motorbike battery: lifespan and care

Electric motorbike battery: lifespan and care

On an electric bike such as a 79Bike, Sur-Ron or Talaria, the lithium battery is a large share of the bike's price. Treated well, it typically keeps 70–80% of its capacity after several hundred full cycles; treated badly, it can degrade much faster. These are the rules that really make a difference.

Lifespan: what to expect

A lithium battery doesn't die suddenly: it gradually loses capacity. With quality 21700 cells (such as the LG M50LT in the Falcon Pro), expect typically 500 to 800 full cycles before dropping to around 80% capacity — roughly 35,000 to 60,000 km of mixed use (estimate). At 80% the battery is still perfectly usable: you lose about 20% of range. Two 50% charges count as one cycle.

What really wears a battery: heat and current

Wear depends mainly on temperature and the current drawn, expressed as "C" (power drawn ÷ battery energy). On the road in L1e-B mode (4 kW max), a 2.5 kWh battery works at 1.6C at most, often far less: very gentle. At full off-road power (10 kW) it reaches about 4C. Bursts of a few seconds are fine; long full-power sessions, especially in hot weather, are what age a pack. After hard riding, let the battery cool for 30 minutes before charging.

72 V or 60 V: why voltage matters

For the same power, a 72 V battery delivers less current than a 60 V one: at 4 kW, about 56 A versus 67 A. Heating rises with the square of the current: at comparable resistance that's about 30% less heat, so more consistent performance at low charge and slower ageing.

Good charging habits

  • Day to day, charge between 20% and 80–90%. Keep 100% for rides where you need full range, and ride soon after.
  • Never leave the battery at 0% for days.
  • Don't charge a battery below 0 °C: let it warm to room temperature.
  • Use only the original charger or a certified compatible one.
  • For storage longer than a few weeks: 40–60% (see winter storage).
Ideal storage window: 40 to 60%, between 10 and 20 °C, never below 0 °C
Red: avoid for storage. Blue: ideal storage window. Yellow: ride days only.

Warning signs

Range dropping sharply from one ride to the next, a battery that gets unusually hot when charging, charging time getting much longer, a swollen or deformed case, an unusual smell: stop using the battery and contact the workshop. Never charge a swollen battery.

Tools you need

  • Original charger
  • RCD-protected socket in a dry, ventilated room

Step-by-step procedure

  1. 1

    Let it cool

After a hard ride, wait about 30 minutes before plugging in.

  2. 2

    Charge in good conditions

Dry, ventilated room at room temperature, away from flammable materials, with the original charger.

  3. 3

    Aim for the right range

Day to day, stop at around 80–90%; go to 100% just before a big ride.

  4. 4

    Inspect

At every charge, check the case, connectors and charger cable.

  5. 5

    Store correctly

For a break of several weeks, leave the battery around 50%, dry, between 10 and 20 °C.

FAQ

Can I leave the battery charging overnight?+

The charger and BMS stop charging at the end of the cycle, but for safety and longevity it's better to unplug once charging is complete and not to charge unattended for long periods.

What is the battery warranty?+

On 79Bike bikes sold by Ride On Distribution, the bike has a 2-year warranty and the battery 1 year, subject to the warranty terms.

Are replacement batteries available?+

Yes, genuine Falcon Pro (72 V / 35 Ah) and Falcon GT (72 V / 40 Ah) batteries are available as spare parts.

Key takeaways

Let it cool before charging, avoid sitting at 100% or 0%, never charge below 0 °C and use the original charger: these habits are worth more than any accessory.
